Delaware Valley 8th Grade Spring Football League
About The League
The league was formed in the spring of 2003. It was the brain child of Mike Daley and Dennis Durand. They were trying to find a way for players headed to Freshman Football in the Fall to hone their skills. There were a lot of camps but there was no way for the players to get some extr game time experience with players their own age. They contacted a few people and teams and the first meetings were held. They couldn't get enough teams together and decided to go at it in the Fall and trying to get teams from the Delaware Valley, hence the name of the league.
So at the end of the 2003 Fall Football Season 8 teams agreed to enter the league and the first games were held the first Saturday of April between the Deptford Spartans and the Magnolia Trojans.
Mission of the League
The mission of the league is to provide an environment for 8th Grade Boys to hone their football skills. The league is billed as a developmental league but it is for the players to develop their Football skills. The teams are to be run as a Freshman High School team where more responsibility is put on the player. The League would like to see all players in every game and frowns on the practice of putting in the "shock troops" in the last minute of a game. To help achieve this the games played during the regular season do not impact on the playoffs. Football is played to a winner and the league does use overtime rules. The league understands that players mature at different speeds and some players it takes longer to grasp the idea of the game but they encourage teams to have offensive and defensive teams as well as separate special teams. Players should bot have to play the entire game. Sometimes this can't be helped with low numbers but we strive to get to that goal.
